Lansdowne History of Lansdowne

Lansdowne originally known as, Kaludanda, after Kalun (Black) and Danda (Hill) in local language, Lansdowne was founded and named after then Viceroy of India, Lord Lansdowne in 1887. Lansdowne was developed by the British for catering for the Recruits Training center of the Garhwal Rifles. Lansdowne was a major place of the activities of freedom fighters from British Garhwal during British period. Nowadays, the famous Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army has its command office here.

Lansdowne Temples Near Lansdowne

Like other hill resorts in north India, Lansdowne too has its fair share of temples and shrines, most of them devoted to the various forms of the Mother Goddess. While you are here, make a wish at Jwalpa Devi, 47 km from Lansdowne on the Pauri-Kotdwar Road, or visit the Durga Devi temple 24 km from Lansdowne and the Tarkeshwar Mahadev 30 km with its special Shivlinga. This temple is one of the oldest Sidhpeeths in India.

Lansdowne Rail - Trains to Lansdowne - Lansdowne is 41 km away from Kotdwar Railway Station.

The nearest railway station is Kotdwara at a distance of 41 km situated an elevation of only 370 m.

Two trains run from Delhi to Kotdwara (Mussoorie Express and Garhwal Express). Mussoorie Express is the best train to reach Kotdwar, the nearest railway station to Lansdowne. The train leaves Old Delhi station at 10.20 pm and reaches Kotdwar at around 6 am in the early morning.

Lansdowne Road - Lansdowne is 250 km from Delhi, and 7-8 hrs drive away.

Delhi - Ghaziabad - Meerut - Najibabad - Kotdwara - Duggada - Lansdowne

It is situated en route Kotdwara - Pauri road, NH 119. One has to take a right turn from NH 119 at a place where Garhwal Rifles has put a huge signboard by paining the directions on rock. Lansdowne is 81 km from Pauri and about 250 km from Delhi.

Since Lansdowne is more than 1,500 m higher than Kotdwara, the drive from Kotdwara to Lansdowne is quite steep and scenic.
